Remember: There is no perfect solution!

Wi-Fi  Security considerations

Wi-Fi connections provide great convenience and flexibility of access.  Whether you’re implementing a wireless home network or using a public access point, there are important security considerations.

Please see “Wireless Insecurity” on our NEWS page as well as the Wi-Fi Alliance for more information.

Can’t open MS Word Documents even though you have MS Word?

Microsoft has introduced a new document format with MS Word 2007 or 2010.   If you see a “.docx” extension on the file, then this is your problem.   There are similar issues with PowerPoint and Excel as well.  Download Microsoft’s “compatibility pack” for Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 HERE. It will allow you to read, edit and save in the new formats.

Need more memory?

Most systems benefit from increased main memory - programs will load and run faster.  If you’ve never added memory to your PC, it’s very likely that you need more.  It’s not that hard to do if you have basic PC skills—otherwise have a qualified person select and install your add-on memory.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Determine how much memory to add and the specific type of memory required:

       Use Crucial’s “System scanner tool

2. Buy online or wait for a sale at your local retailer.  It’s far less expensive on sale.

3. Follow the installation instructions in the owner’s manual for your computer.

When should I upgrade?

Most businesses are still relying on Windows XP, a tried and true version of Windows.  Windows XP will not be around forever though, and all updates from Microsoft will stop as of April 8, 2014.  See  full details here.  While that sounds like a long time from now you don’t want to be stuck upgrading your entire environment at once.  That would be expensive and logistically difficult.  It’s best to plan in advance—and look into new options for increasing the effectiveness  and reducing the cost of your IT investments.
